Connections by Tariq Usman Luni

I was brought up in an agricultural family belonging to Luni village near Sibi in Baluchistan. I have always been close to nature and was able to absorb the ambiance.
My source of inspiration has been my bondage with nature, family and simplicity of life experiences.
I understood the power of my feelings towards my past and found ways to express my feelings in a concise and complete manner during my tenure at N.C.A. It was there I realized the potential to carve my thoughts in physical space and give them tangibility.
From my early childhood memories even before I understood the meaning of art I remember making toys with wood and clay.
Ever since I have tried several other mediums but prefer to work with wood because of its flexibility to take any form I wish and its durability to withstand the rigors of aging. I am also moved by the texture of wood and use it as an inspirational element towards my final creation.
Being an artist I always focus on a theme before I start my work. All my sculptures are then based on that common theme and converge towards a central idea. The subject of my current body of work is Connections. The term connection in itself holds a magnitude of meanings. In nature and life in general things we see are either connected directly or indirectly have a link with other elements and their surroundings.
To further elaborate the concept of Connections. Two people of very different origins and gender are brought together in matrimony. They are engaged using a ring as a motif. This element of connection binds them together in a powerful tie that lasts forever and aids in progressing life and thus creates more connections through out the journey.

I am also motivated by other similar elements that form connections in the circle of life and hope to connect with you in the process.
